.WINTER CLASSES OF INSTRUCTION. The committee of Iho Dunedin Horticultural Society purposes this year inaugurating a policy which should prove immensely popular wit h the flower-loving .section of tho community, and also be of great advantage to the sonioty itself. This is the formal ion amongst members of a mutual improvement society, to meet during Iho winter months for tho consideration and discussion of leading features of horticultural interest. It is proposed that, the session should comprise 12 lorlniglitly meetings, at each of which a paper should be read on some subject, of mutual intcicst by a recognised expert, and that, the discussion should be opened by two persons, previously selected, qualified to speak with somo amount; of authority on the particular questions raised in the ,|>aper. Tito draft syllabus includes Iho following subjects:—Fowis, chrysanthemums. garden pests, pelargoniums, hardy flowers, roses, Ihe collagtj garden, spring garden, pruning, carnations, native plants, and dahlias. From this it will be 6ccn that a wide field js proposed to bo covered, and the information that, will be disseminated should prove of Rreat. value not only lo those who grow flowers and fruit, for show purposes, but also to tho Jnuch larger seclion who do so for Iho sake of making their homes bright and attractive. Similar institutions aro in operation in conjunction with the big horticultural societies in Ureal, llrilain, and Mr D, Tannock, who is convenor of Iho sub-committee which has Iho mailer'ill .hand here, _ha-s had an intimate acquaintance with their working in connection with .tho Itoyal Botanic Gardens at Kew, Iho. Royal Horticultural Gardens at Ohiswick, and also at Ealing. Last year the Dunedin Society started a horticultural class in connection with tho Dunedin Technical School, and tho departure proposed this year is really supplementary to the. work dono in Ihose classes. It is expected that a room for the fortnightly mcctinqs will bo obtained in the Technical School.
