MINING

The "MellM Dredging Company, Miller's Pint, secured a return of Soar, for 130 hours' work. Tho ilolyn.eux Tliver was reported to be 9ft 2in at Alexandra yesterday. The Clyde dredge has slopped operations in the meantime owing to a- rise, in the river. The drodgemastcr reports that during the last shift on Saturday night payable wash was struck. Tho previous week ho had been dredging drift for (lie most part. A.u Auckland telegram states that during February the Komati Beefs Gold Mining Conipauy treated 1920 tons of ore for bullion worth £3318. Eight tons of antimony ore from Messrs Sligo, Horn, and party's prospecting area, which lies on the Carrick range, between Carrickton and Nevis, was sent to Sydney yesterday with the object of having its value tested. So lar nothing of a permanent nature has been found, but tho prospects of the last week gives ..hotter promise. The master of the Waikaia dredge reports that there was a fairly steady "week's dredging up to last Wednesday. Work was carried on up to Wednesday in tho west section, and tile dredge was then shifted into tho middlo and east sections. Tho west section prospects are very fair, and the depth was 22ft to 23ft. The middle section carrier, a gutter 2Slt Gin deep, rising towards the 'cast section to 24ft; maori bottom; length of face nine aud a-half chains. Tho latest advices from the Paracale Gold Dredging Company indicates that good progress is being wade with the erection Df tho company's dredge. The weekly report from the .Mount Hex, Avoca, is as follows:—Alluvial: Xo. ljiace— We shall havo the wash in the race during tire coming week. We have bad to lift tho bottom 3ft to 4ft. The wash is* patchy. Xo. 2_face: This looks better, but it is "rough. Xo. 1 level (western drive): This was driven 2ft, then granite was met with,. Ift was then driven, then it bore hole put .in Git in granite. The width of stone is 12ft, but it is poor. V.'c thou opened a drive south. This has 1 been put in Sit; the stone is poor. This drivo will be South Drivo Xo. 2. Tho annual meeting of shareholders in the Golden Crescent Sluicing Company was held on Thursday, February 28 (says the Tnapeka Times). The report showed that, in spite of tho extremely unfavourable weather experienced for some time past, tho dividends paid represented a return of 10 per cent, on tho capital. Mr E. C. Urowne was re-elected director, and Mr H. H. Leary auditor. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded the manager and his staff and secretary. DTJXEDIX STOCK EXCHAXGE. There is very littlo to chronicle in connection with Stock Exchange business yesterday. The recent rise of a couple of feet in tho river has given gorge stocks another set back, and buyers aro not disposed to advanco

"to soiling prices, and so far the margin still obtains. Following ou the salo of the Dunstan Lend drcclgo, which realised a prico quito beyond the expectations of the speculating public, shares wero offered at 2s yesterday morning, with buyers in the afternoon at Is Cd, as against sales previous to the dredge being sold of lOd. Tho drodgo realised ifi72s. which-, after paying off the mortgage and other liabilities, should leavo a liquidation dividend of something like 2s per share. Tho riso ill tho river lias been specially unfortunate for tho Lady Roxburgh Company, wliicli recnntly left some good ground at the top of the claim to open out ■at the lowor end. pending a falling river to opeu the top end of the claim, adjoining tils boundary of the Endeavour Company. Tho dredge is one of large capacity, and it is anticipated that on a low river good returns will bo won. Kiso and Shines were inquired for yesterday at 12s, with sellers at 15s. Rising Suns are in demand, but recent sellers- have withdrawn from the market in consequence of tho improved -returns of the last feu* weeks. Auckland stocks a,ro mostly firm. THE TOST COAST, (Pnou Our Own Cokrespondekt.) ! mt GREYuMOUTH, March 6. The Consoliated Gt)ldfieidg of New Zealaii4 Co. has issued two circulars dealing with the purchaso of tho Blackwater reefs. The first says that in consequence of the entirely satisfactory way in which the Blackwator mine has opened up, the directors have exercised tho option hold by the two companies, A transfer of the property has been completed l in the joint names of the Consolidated Goldfields of New Zealand, and tlio balance of the purchase money, of £27,000, making in all £30,000, has boon paid. For this an area of 2900 ft on the lino of reef was secured, and prospecting carried oil "through a d.eposit of from 00ft to 70ft of alluvial deposit. The roef on the southern end had been proved on tho surface for 500 ft, and an additional length of 630 ft was subsequently driven on. Tho main vrinzo was stopped at 260 ft, to which depth it has been sunk in highly payable stone without a break tho whole way, the reef having been proved to within 800 ft of tho southern boundary. It was considered very desirable to acquire tho adjoining ground, and this has been doue, an option having been acquired at a purchase prico of £4000 for tho entire areas of 100 acres. To summarise tho position, tho manager, estimates that, allowing that tho ore continues throughout down to tho 2Coft level (it lias already been proved in tlio various winzes at the shallower depths to which they have been sunk), as well ' as through the main winze, there would bo exposed 38,000 tons, of an average assay value of loz per ton—equal to, say, £160,000 above the 2Goit level in the southern portion of the property alone., The property, judged by this, ia of great worth, As tho Consolidated and Progress Companies were both in it, it has been decided to form a new company, named' tbo' Blackwater Mines (Ltd.), with a capital of £250,000, of whieh £200,000 is to bei issued in fully paid-up shares as the purchase price of tho property, and received in equal moities by the two companies. The remaining £50,000, reserved for working capital, has been subsoxibcil—£*2s,ooo by tlio Consoliated and £25,000 by tho Progress Company, upon which shares. 5s each has been called up. A strong company has .been formed, and as work is being rapidly proceeded with, gold-winning may bo looked for in about 12 months. Tho present prospects are better than these existing when tho .circulars were issued'. TBEATMBXT OF KEFRACTORY ORES. The successful iroatment of gold and silver ores of a refractory nature, especially telluride, arsenllca-I, and pyritical ores, is a matter of great interest to the mining industry, and a movement is afoot to work tho Mount Zeeban property, in tho Auckland district, audi uso a now process for saving tho bullion, Jlciunt Zeehan mine is in tho refractory oro belt, to. tho north of tho Thames galdfields, and has lor.g been stated to contain high, oro values, but which liavo not hitherto been successfully treated, lix A. T. Firth, mining and metallurgical engineer, who i 3 at present in Wellington in connection with this company, states that it is intended to treat tho oro from tho Mount Zeelian mines by the Cqraplex oro refining process, which ha 3 beeii patented by Mr W. E. - Cayley Alexander, M.1.M.M.E.. By this process, it is stated, 90 per cent, of tho gold and silver values have" been successfully extracted, and it is. also claimed that the total cost of treatment by this process will bo less than that of free milling ore by the ordinary battery process, Mr Firth states that a most important problem has been solved, as by this process over 103 square miles, containing millions of tons of highly refractory ore, in the TVaiomo district, can now bo successfully treated, WEEKLY MARKET REPORTS.
