The Tapanui Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club held its first general sports meeting 011 February 27 under very favourable weather conditions and in the presence of a large number of enthusiastic spectators. The events were got off well up to time, and the officials deserve credit for the manner in which they worked to make the meeting a success. Some veiy good racing was witnessed, but most of the local runners could do with more steady training. The local champion piper (Mr Alex. Duncan), assisted by Mr R. A meeting of the committee of the above club was held on Tuesday night, The secretary reported tli at tho entries for all tho events !iad Tilled' .well. In tho Half-mile Bicycle Raco IS riders had entered, and a like number for tho Wheel Raco of two miles. Tho Mile, and Mile and a-half events had also received a large entry. Tho riders who intend competing comoas far afield as Invercargill to Christcburch. Tho record number of 27 have entered for tho Sheffield Handicap, representing tho fastest runners in Now Zealand, and including A. A. Nicliolls, tho ex-champion 440 yds runner of Victoria, D. Hirtton has got his machine going well for bis attempt on tho New Zealand moior cycle record of ltnin 24 l-sscc, and is sanguine ho will go near beating the existing time. Fourteen entries have been received for tho 220 yds amateur event, a'nd 10 for tho Mile. The first motor car gymkhana held in P/unedin should also provo a sourco of great interest. The car parade to the grounds will leave the Triangle at 2 o'clock, under the control of Dr Fulton and Mr J. F. M. Fraser. and a large'number of owners of the petrol-driven machines have, signified their intention of turning out. To lend a ;pico of amusement to the day's sport tho committee lias, arranged for a musical chair competition. This event is decided as follows: Tho starters rido round the track, and when ever the band ceases playing scorch round to tho chairs, of which thero is ono short, the rider who fails to secure a chair having to fall out. Another chair is then removed, and the game goes on till there is but one chair left and two riders, and tho ono who secures the seat wins the competition.
