DUXEDIX JOCKEY CLUB'S AUTUMN MEETING. TI.O third (lay's races of tho autumn meeting, of tho Dunedin Jockey Club were held at Wingatui on Saturday. Tho weather was fine. Rain threatened in the afternoon, but fortunately held off. Tho attcndanco compared favourably with that of the opening day. The track .was in good order, being pretty firm despite the rain that had fallen on the previous day. The totalisator investments showed a substantial increase on those of tho third day of the autumn meeting last year. They amounted to £84S1 10s, or £1793 10s more than last }'|ar. Tho following is a comparison of the investments at the meeting with those at tho meeting last February— ■ 19067 1907. ■ First day £8857 10 £8271 0 Scoond day ... 5625 10 6153 10 Third day 6698 0 849110 £21,181 0 £22,921 0 This shows an increase for tho three days this year of £1740. There were some good dividends declared during the afternoon, the most satisfactory being £15 18s, which was paid on Astrakhan in lite Anniversary Handicap. In six of tho races dividends were piid on the 6ccund horse. On Wednesday and Thursday second dividends wore also paid in six of tho events. Wild Cat was out making the pace in the Hurdle Race, with Royal Shell as his closest attendant over tho first part of tlio journey. Tho latter made two very had jumps in the back stretch and settled his chance. Nothing seriously menaced Wild Cat' 6 chances in tho ran. home. Toney was loft on the mark when tho field got away in the Flying Handicap, and in a good finish homo the verdict wont to Zetland. The majority on tho ground did not agree with the official finding, the general impression being that Fireirou was first past tho post. Lupnlitowas always prominent in tho Warrington Haclc, and finally won after a good finish with Imaginary. The Seer was eloso up third. All those that coloured on tho card went out for tho Anniversary Handicap. Balsajn lost a bit of ground at tho start through hanging firo when the barrier went np, and Bucclcuch at onco wont to tho front, but was quickly joined by Red Gauntlet, and tho pair made the paco very solid going down tho back, cutting out. tho first two furlongs in something like 24sec. Red Gauntlet was first to retire, and Buccleuch was shortening his strido when ho was halfway up the hill, whoro Apolodons had taken command. ]n tho run from tho distance Apollodoris and Astrakhan fought out a good; finish, and winning honours went to the Stepiiiak colt by about a short half length. Apollodoris bad nono tho best of tho deal in the last furlong, as Astrakhan, who did not finish too straight!} - , rolled on to him a couple of times. Amboiso won tho Hopeful in decisive fashion from Cockleshell, who got badly away, and Santa Clans bad his cbaneo spoiled bv failing to jump out with tho others. Secret won the Abbotsford Welter and annexed a gcod race before she the judge's eye. Harvest had the field in the Waihola Hack apparently, at his mercy once the straight was reached, and won with a little to spare at the finish. A popular win was recorded in, the last race of the day, in Avhicli Apollodoris broke the sequence of poor luck which had boon following the Zetland spots throughout the meeting, and won handsomely. Mr Piper's starting was up to his usual standard, the fields v being invariably well in lino when tho barrel' was released. The arrangements for tho meeting wcro admirable in all respects. Everything worked smoothly. Only ono meeting of stewards was held, and that was called to deal with a minor offence. Mr H. L. James, tho secretary, worked with a will.
