THE EXHIBITION.
'SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS. FOUR HUNDRED BABIES ON SHOW. CFeou Odb Own Correspondent.) CHUISTCHUROH, February 21. To-day has been a day of- davs at tho Exhibition, and the attendance 'has been large from the opening till' closing lime. Tho baby show, athletic sports meeting, baomeV*ng-f.hrow:ing, a.ud Clwistiian Endeavour Union demonstration formed a variety of special attractions that has seldom been matched.
Over 500 babies had been entered for the show boforo the entries finally closed, and there, were quite 400 on exhibition, including half a dozen pairs in tho class for twins. They wero ranged in four lines down tho main corridor of the Exhibition, nral judged by Mrs Field, Nurse Ensom. and Ibo genera! manager (Mr C 4. S. Munroj in batches of about. 20 in tho commissioner's loom. Soon after 8, o'clock Mr Munro announced the results, and stated tliai the had lieen, he believed, tho biggest of lis kind ever held in tho Southern Hemisphere, nnd certainly tho biggest in the colony. Every child was presented with a certificate of attendance. The youngsters were on their best behaviour throughout the proceedings, and tlio show afforded entertainment, to a large number of tho public. Simultaneously the first day's sports of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association were held on the sports ground in tho presence- of a fair attendance.
The exhibition of boomerang-throwing by an Australian expert created a good deal of interest by its novelty, but tho success of tho performance was spoiled somewhat by the wind.
Tho demonstration in tho concert hall by tho Christian Endeavour Union in the ncning attracted a large audience.
Jlr Muiiro -has ■written to Lieutenant Bonllcy warmly thanking him Ifor his sen-ices in connection with tho recent band contest, and placing on record his view of tho very satisfactory manner in whioh Lieutenant Bentlcy carried out his duties as judge. ■>
The sign "State Apiary," executed in large letters of honeycomb by busy bees attached to that interesting industrial division, has been placed in position over the fine display of honey in the Agricultural Department's court. _ Tho attached notice ftfttcs that, the sign is an example of what bees can do when under control.
Advio" has been received bv Mr N. ,T. Scott, the South Australian Commissioner, that the two tons of grapes from- that Stale to be disposed of in the Exhibition Building will be shipped in time to arrive in Ohrislehurch by the end of tho current month.
The amateur athletic championship meeting will be continued on the sports ground on Saturday. •
On' th.' l following- Saturday will bo given the first disp'av of daylight fireworks, and on February 28 the Bosses o' th' Barn Band w4fl commence a- second season of 12 afternoon and 12 evening performances.
The attendance at the Exhibition to-day reached the high 'total of 21.570.
