M.C.C. v. WELLINGTON. A DRAWNGAMK (P«l United Pkess Association.) WELLINGTON, February 18. Owing to the rain which fell this morning the cricket match between the M.C.C. team and Wellington was not resumed until 11.50 a.m., when the local team, with no wickets down for 15 runs, continued their first innings. The wicket was a bit damp, but it played much bettor than was expected. The outfield was sodden, and it was wild difficully that flic ball was made to travel to the boundary. The attendance was limited. The first and second wickets fell early, but ;v very valuable stand was made bv Cobcroffc and Laws. The former's innings was one of great caution, while Laws was most aggressive, and scored more than twice as quickly as his partner. The pair had added 7* to the total before Laws was run out from a call from Ooboroft, for a run which appeared to be extremely risky; though, had the retiring batsman not hesitated for a moment or two, he might hsvo succeeded in wiving his wicket. Laws's innings was only marred by an easy catch to de Trafibrd when he had scored "4+ and by a possible chance a little earlier. When the under-hand bowler (Simpson-Hayward) went on the wickets began to fall quickly, and the next four batsmen were out with only another 39 added to the sheet. The local skipper followed Cobcroft's style of cautious play, and his innings was invaluable in breaking down the opposition. The liveliest play of 1110 day took place when the last two men were at the wickets. M'Dennid hit out with a freedom that was quite refreshing after 6omc of the tedious play earlier in the game. Five bowlers were used, but none appeared to trouble the batsmen so much as the undorhander. Tho fielding of the visitors was patchy, cve"n io carelessness at times, and two easy catches were dropped. Tho first innings of the Wellington men occupied just about the same time as that of tho visitors on Friday—three hours and five minutes,—and their score compares very favourably with (hut of their opponents, seeing that they were batting on a wicket which gave them no assistance. At 5.10 p.m. the Englishmen lwgan their second innings, and lost four wickets in a very short time, much to the delight of the onlookers. Then Burns and Harrison became associated, and livened up matters' considerably, the former especially laying on tho wood with effect. Harrison was bowled just on the call of time, and then stumps were drawn, the game ending in a draw. The following arc the scores:— ■ M.C.C. First Innings 201 Second Innings.
