The Pall Mall Gazette says that where, ns ill Lord Clanricarde s ease, the responsibilities of property are so cynically ignored, a desperate case may require a desperate remedy, especially if it selfishly obstructs a- gieai national settlement.
On November 28 in iho House of Commons Mr Duffy, a fluent, excitable Irishman, introduced a bill io provide for the expropriation of flic Marquis of Clqiiricardp from lijs Irish estates. It was, ho declared, impossible to preserve t|io appearance of law ami order from the Shannon to the tea whilo Lord Clauricardo was allowed to exercise his free and unfettered will. With earnestness and cloquonco Mr Duffy proceeded to a ferocious attack on his lordship as a landlord. "Ho even closed the brewery," he exclaimed, flinging out his hands in eloquent gesture. The House! roared with delight. Having poured abuso on Lord Clativicavde for five minut-cp, Mr Duffy took a breath. " And now," lie said, " let me briefly describe this man." Again tho House gave itself up to unrestrained laughter. Presently tho Prime Minister rose to compliment Mr Duffy 011 his " temperate, earnest, and cffoctivo language." He was very sympathetic, but, in view of " tho new era opening for Ireland," did not see that, the bill could go further. T\yo or three members signified their opposition to its introduction by rising, Mr Moore, the'newly-elected Irish representative, being the first on his feet. A great howl went up from tho Irish benches, and Mr Moore was violently asked, "Where is tho blackthorn'; "
