HOUSING THE WORKERS
A MUNICIPAL SCHEME, (Pze Ukttp.d Patss Association.) AUCKLAND, February 15. At the City Council meeting last night tho mayor submitted a. lengthy report on the schemo for the housing of workers in proximity to tho city. lie favoured a sohonro involving wholly municipal capital expenditure, and tbo erection of houses of brick at an estimated of £430 for fourroomed. cottages and £480 for five-roomed cottages, inclusive of the ccst of land, to 60 routed., the former at 8s to 10s, and tho latter at'los to lis. He recommended thas in tho first instance £20,000 be borrowed, which would enable at least 40 bouses to be crectcd. The council resolved that with a view to obviating the danger of tho growth of slumps in Auckland, and providing suitable dwellings for 11 section of tho community whose wants were not. supplied in any other way, the schomc brought forward by the mayor ho referred to the Finance Committee for its consideration and report.
