DOMESTIC SCIENCE.
A GENEROUS OFFER. (Per Umited' Press Association.)
ASHBURTON January 28 : With the. ohjepi, <|£ founding it Professorship of Homo Economics on Domostio Science upon a plan extensively in vogue in tlio United Siates of America, Mr John 'Hudliolme, of Coldstream, lias offered to coniribule for three years the sum of £200 per annum towards the salary of the professor, provided that Miss Gilchrist, of the Tennessee University, is appointed. Mr Studhclme has placed this oner before the -Minister of Education and the governors of the Canterbury College. Commenting on the offer, the Guardian says:—"Were the coimlry to establish a phair of Home Economics on Domestic Science its occupier would be able nob only to organise long coursis for university students, leading to a degree, but. shorter courses for students and others not desirous of going as far as a degree, iu domestic science, also classes for teachers at normal schools and lectures tq women in ihe various centres of population."
REFERRED TO COMMITTEES. (Per United I'iipss Assochtios.) CHKISTOHITftOH, January 28. At Iho meetings of the University Senate and the Canterbury College Boi|vd of (lovernors 10-dav lefters were received from Mr John Siudiiolme, of Coldstream, urging the establishment of a chair in homo economics at Canterbury College, or in default at Aidoria College. Mr Sludliolmo stated lie'would be willing. Io contribute £200 annually for three years towards the, upkeep of the chair. The letters were referred to committees to report.
