LONDON, January 25. The proprietors of M. A. P., wliich offered its readers financial advice, have been ordered, on tho ground of negligence, to pay the sum of £1400. The amount was lost through its city editor referring an investor privately to an untrustworthy outside broker.
INSPECTION OF CANNED GOODS. OTTAWA, January 25. The Hon. S. A. Fisher, Minister of Agriculture, in the course of a debate in the Canadian House of Commons on tlio question of the compulsory inspection of canned goods for export, said that he had reason to believe that within six months Great Britain wouldi exclude Canadian moats not provided with a Government certificate.

PLAGUE. SYDNEY, January 26. Two cases of plague have been reported, and a third is under suspicion. The victims were employed at King street, in the heart of the city. SYDNEY, January 27. (Received Jan. 27, at 5.13 p.m.) A third case of plague has developed, and has ended fatally. AX INTERESTING CEREMONY. SYDNEY, January 27. (Received Jan. 27, at 5.12 p.m.) The interesting ceremony of unveiling the anchor of H.JI.S. Hirins, which convoyed the first fleet to Sydney, took place yesterday. The vessel was wrecked at Norfolk Island in 1790. The anchor was recently recovered, and mounted' on a stono pedestal on the site where Governor Phillip first resided.

CRICKET. SYDNEY, January 27. (Received Jan. 27, at 5.13 p.m.) In the cricket match New South Wales v. Victoria the New South Wales team in their first innings made 491. Diamond made 210 not out, Macartney 72, ami Cotter 34. Armstrong had the'best bowling average, securing four wickets for 116. The Victorians have lost nine wickets for l<7 Armstrong made 103 not out. and Alacalister 51.
OUTBE-KAK OF DISEASE. LONDON, January 26. (Received Jan. 27, at 4.57 p.m.) An outbreak of cerebro spinal meningitis has occurred at Belfast. Eight deaths have occurred out of 12 eases. THE WEATHER. SYDNEY, January 27. The weather was fine for the holidays yesterday, hut rain set in at ni«ht.'

ACCIDENT TO STEAMER KARITANE. SYDNEY, January 27. (Received Jan. 28, at 1.19 a.m.) The steamer Karitane has been docked here. On her last volage to Stralmn, while manoeuvring in the harbour, she struck a. rock, and leaked slightly, but the captain brought her to to Sydney for examination, which reveals extensive damage.
