Mr ]). Kitchio, second officer of the Manuka, left his vessel in Auckland in order io come smith. Mr S. 11. W-alson, third officer, is now second, and Mr W. K. Atkinson, fourth officer, has been promoted tliird officer.
Although Captain G. Burton, R.X.H., is bringing tho Shaw-SaviH Company's new Moatncr Ariuva out Io New Zealand on her maiden trip, it is understood that Captain ilalfait will bo given permanent command of tho vessel, and that Captain Burton will transfer 1o the Jlamari.

Captain -T. Damson, late master of the Karifane, is coining to headquarters by the Mooraki this trip for instructions. During her brief visit to Port Chalmers tlio Waiwera has taken on board largo quantities of wool, tallow, hemp, and frozen mutton. She will probably sail this afternoon for Lytlcltoii. and leaves tho latter port finally on the 31.-st inst. for London.
Tho 'l'arawera arrived from Auckland, via East Coast ports, yesterday forenoon, and tenlied at, tho longno wharf about 11.30 a.m., after a fim> weather passage throughout. Tho Tnrawora. proceeds to Port Chalmers at 2 p.in to-day, and it is understood sho will lay \ip for a short Bpell.
_ The Warrimoo arrived on Saturday morning from Sydney, via Wellington! The vessel left Sydney at 2 p.m. on the 19th inst., and arrived at Wellington afler ai passage of 3 days 21 hours. Sho called at Lyttolton on Friday, arriving as above after a iine-weallier passage. Tho Warrimoo steamed down to Port yesterday, and will await tho arrival of tho Waikarc to-day before sailing at 3 p.m. for Melbourne, via Bluff.
The barquo Vikjng has been chartered to load kauri gum at Auckland for Now York. The barquo sailed from Singapore for the Mauritius on September 19, and is due at Auckland about the end of next month, and will load early in -March.
It is announced that the Russian Government- lias placed proposals before a number of German shipbuilding firms for the construction of now freight 6toawers io the value of £1,500,000. The steamers are intended for private shipping companies, lint the Russian Government will guarantee tho payment, and has also hid tho plane prepared. Tho object in. view is apparently to provide a new merchant fleet for Russia, and the action of tho Government is said to imply an acknowledgment of the powerlessness of Russiap shipbuilding yarda at the present timo. It is, however, doubtful whether even German shipbuilders will accept such orders, as tho Russian Government actually requires a mortgage loan to be advanced on the vessels to bo built, and negotiations with the bank connections of Uio Urge shipyards aro reported to liavo already been entered upon by tho Government in regai-d to tho matter.
Tho W/aikaro is expected to reach Port Olialmera about 8 a.m. to-day from the West Coast Sounds, and will steam up to town to-morrow forenoon, sailing again at ♦ p.m. for Lytteltou, where she will tranship to tho Mokoia and return to Dunedin te enter the Dunedin-Auckland service.
Tho Aparima arrived at Dunedin on Saturday forenoon from Tiinaru, and berthed at tho Victoria wharf at 11.30 a.m. After putting out the remainder of her cargo sho proceeds to Port Chalmers, where she will have some alight repairs effected in iho stokehold, and upon completion is to proceed to Newcastle, probably on Tuesday afternoon.
