THE SHOOTING SEASON.

SIE, —Jn answer lo tho letter inquiring about the opening' of the shooting seasons J. must say Ikat-iho Otago Acdhnaf-ieotion Society aro ;wcrfectiy in order about their oponing ancf closiing of tho deer shooting seasons. To a further rme-Siaon about the opening of the duck-shooting reason, your corrcspoudent wishes to know whether the Otago Society have tho light to say whether there shall bo a season or not. It has been the usual custom for tho Govonunont to ask the various acclimatisation societies annually for recommendations as to what they considered was proper, and as you no doubt noticed, last year there was a difference of opinion oven amongst tho societies as to what should b<j done. So tho orders for t.ho opening or closing of the native game seasons are etrictly Government orders. I am quit* in sympathy with sportsmen having tha. reasons advertised in proper time, and so j'fr should be, us I am quite awaro that from £5 lo £7 in usually spent by the average duck shooter for his bit of sport, and it is ouly right that every consideration should be shown him hy advertising (hose .seasons in a proper manner. Probably if the Gazette, k looked over this yoai due information required will bo obtained in plenty of lime. Reference is mado to tho Otago Gun Sporbsmeu's Association taking tho matter lip. X miglit infonn your correspondent that the members of the association can obtain any necessary infor-

mation they should require, nnd arc banded together ns sportsmen to cepccinlly assist to protect our native game during breeding

-I am, etc., Thb rmstDKKT or Tar, Oiabo Gtjn' Sportsmex's Association. South Dunwlin, January 2*.
