WAIKOUAITI CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.

('lie Waikouaili Recreation Ground is very prettily situated, as from ils precinels tho eyo catches pleasant, prospects of hillside, and yesterday, on the occasion of ihe,Caledonian Society's annual gathering, it looked its best. For an hour in the morning tho weather was very threatening, and a. heavy shower of rain fell. but. before the. sports began the clouds had cleared away, and Iho sun shone out brilliantly. A cool breeze, however, tempered the heat, and the ladies on the ground, of whom there tt'oro a fair number, found pleasant shade under the Irees. The grass dried quickly after tho shower, and Ihe turf was in good condition. Since the sociely's last gathering a cinder irack has been laid round the ground, and ils si retell of MO yards is a decided improvement on (lie former grass track, which was only 300 yards long. The dry ecason has been all against the formation of a cinder track, but, as the result of .praiseworthy olfort, it. was in' very fair condition, although loose surface cinders increased times somewhat. By next year this defect, should bo removed. Tho meeting, the first, held under the auspices of the X™- Zealand Athletic Association, was an entire «iteccss in every way. and, thanks to the judgment, of the haudicappers, eoine very good finishes were witnessed. The takings at the gate exceeded £24, and this sum, along wiih revenue from other sources, will put the society in a, sound financial position. During the course of tho afternoon Mr T. Mackenzie, M.H.R., visiled the grounds, and I here was a large gathering of tho Bocicly'o ollieials, who all worked hard to ensure tho success of the meeting.
