TRAM FARES.
10 m F.DIIOh. Din,--there is a letter in your issue oi ISti' signed '"J. ii. li." i'j () savs lie ia forry tlv.il. the agitation for reduction of ,® r, ' am ' a , Ki i s allowed to lapse, otc. lio alio sap that, if the terminal fares wero reduced to 2d and the concession token" koto abolished, there would px>bably ho Mile -low to the tramway department,' clo Ho lit inks (aptly put, ]- l 0 "thinks") the travclsmj public is getting ,tired oi the present token system, and more opinions of a like nature. Evidently "J. R. II" j s very human (selfish) in his ideas—vi?. he wants the tramway authorities to benefit urn, and perhaps a few oihers, in lieu of the very many who buy the tokens who ® t!lcm short distances of pertans <mly two or three blocks. 1 noticed in the pkcS some of the o:tv Fathers have fallacious ideas as to the increase of revenue '1 the tokens wero abolished. My own experience is that when I have the'tokens on me I often have short rides when I would noc pay cash for the same. I have 'little doubt ihcre are many of a- similar opinion who naa between the north end of (jeor«,c street and the south end of Princes stree't, but will not trouble to write to the press io that eliect. I am of opinion that if the concession tokens are abolished the train revenue will differ but little, as there would ii M? or the cars. Takiiie f.U tilings into consideration, Dunedin and ns subnrbs arc well served either en short or lon ? distances, If "J. li. H." had (he experience of tho back-blocks of Ota?o, as I have had, he might then be of my opinion: if not. lie should live, say, for 12 months in the Catlins district, with its bad roacos and Other drawbacks. Suppose tbcfarc was reduce! to Sr. Clair, would it not e,', :11, 6p.. value of freehold there? Would'lfc benefit, tenants? I guess not. for the rents would possibly be increased in proportion to cheap fares. Possibly "J. H. II." is a freeholder. I have' often noticed a. woman with two or more children, with their little buckets and wooden fpsiies, who are only charged one fare. Surely that is cheap cwiugh to St. Clair, and encouragement in the'right direction. Not so if it is to benefit a few well-to-do residents a.t the expense of others who use the tokens for short distances.—l am, etc., J. K. E.
