THE LATE MR HUGH GOURLEY.

The last tribute of public respect was mid in tho remains of tlm late Mr Hugh Gourlov yesterday, when he was laid to rest in ti.. Anglican portion of tho Southern Cemetery. At five minutes to 2 p.m., while the body was bointj conveyed from the resionco in Clarke street to" the hearse, tho bells of St. Matthew's lolled three strokes each minute, the customary number for a male member of the church who is deceased* ami when tho body left the hearse at the cemetery the bells lolled 81 strokes at' intervals of 10 seconds, representing the ,150 of tho deceased. Clarke street, previous to Hie cortege darting on ii.i mournful .journey to the cemetery, was thronged with large numbers of vehicles, and in addition to (lie vehicles a very large number of citizens were in attendant*! on foot to pay respect to (he memory of one who hod served tho community well in many public rapacities. The public lwdi.es with which Ihe lute Mr Gourley had been connected were all represented, and us the lienrso left, the deceased's late residence tho relatives followed immediately behind, and about 300 citizens came next, and tlie.su were followed by a. long procession of carriages and conveyances. The length of tile entire funeral procession extended from tho Market Reserve in Princes street South to the Bank of New Zealand corner at Rattray street. When the eemcrcry was reached the coffin was conveyed from the hoarse to the graveside liv'the late Mr Gourley's three sons, 11. J.," ,J. M„ :lm l I). G. Gourley, and the sons wore assisted in their mournful task by .Air A. Ross, son-ill. law, and other immediate friends. The Rev. W. Cttrzon-Siggers read the impressive Anglican Church burial service over tho remains, a-nd after they had been consigned to the earth, a large number of immortelles and floral tributes wero laid upon tho grave. Ross, the secretary and engineer (Mr J. Blair Mason); Captain M'Ciilhim, and a largo number of members of the oflipc and general stall'; Union Steam Ship Company—Capt. Strang and Mr J. F. Kirbv, and Mr ,T. Cooke : Benevolent Institution, llr Mee; Drainage Board, Mr Esther (secretary); St. Kilda Borough Council, Messrs W. Burl: and J. J. Marlow; Dunedin Jockey Club—Mr Jae. Hazlelt (vice-president). Mr Harry L. .Tames (secretary), and Messrs W, Conijhlan, M. Couglilan, S. S. Mvers, and R. Kwing; whilst on behalf of the Forbtiry Park Racing Club there were Mr E. L. Macassoy (secretary) and other members. The Manoiiestor Ufity and 1.0.0. F. were also rcpreseiited, and the Freemasons wore headed by Mr ti. Serincer (Lodge Celtic) and Mr D. A. M'Nicoll (1.C.). Mr M'Curdy represented t.ho Peninsula local bodies. Public Works Department. Mr Usshcr; Pensions Department, Mr R. S. Stokes; Telegratili Department, Mr A. J. Talbot; Drukls—Messrs A. J. Ryan. P.G.D.P., \V. Wardrop, P.G.D.P., A. H. Sheiton, P.D.G.S., and other members of Otago Lodge of Druids, No 1, of which lodge the late Mr Gourley was for 20 years a. senior trustee, and rendered considerable service in connection with the finances. Inspector O'Brien, ex.Scrgeant O'Neill, ex-Sergeant Geerin, and Sergeant Conn attended on behalf of tho police, and Mr Bratbv_ (gaoler) was also present. Matthew's, and a. seatlioldor from the opening of the church, and as Mayor of tho city unveiled tho chapel in memory of tho Queen's Jubilee.
