The hearing of the charges against Jolm Hiimia, Oeorge Bull, arid Edward Miihoney, of unlawfully keeping liquor for sale, was continued to-day before . Mr M'Carfhy, S -M. The principal evidence for the prose, chiton _was that of Detective M'llvcnoy, who raided the hut occupied by these inch on Saturday night and again'on Mdnday afternoon, and found 011 each occasion evidence of the delivery of stich a quantity of liquor ns could'not reasonably bo re gnrcled as for their own consumption. Tho position of the kegs and the proximity of (i towel and a number of glasses gavethe place the appearance of a miniature bar. Two gallons of beer had satisfied them from Ihn 4th to tho 7th of (ho month, but thereafter they had 45 gallons in 10 .days. Defendants denied that they kept liqiior for sale, and said that tho average consumplion of each was not less tlitln two gallons IK!r «i. lv , Har™ s a j ( ] that on Saturday he consumed three gallons of beer and part of a bottle Of whisky between the hours of 2 and 8 tun. To-monw morning Mr W. Y. H. Hall, solicitor for the defendants, addresses tho court on questions of law, and it is expected that thereafter the magistrate will give his dec ; 6on. • A feature of the cross-examina-tion of the defendants this afternoon was the evidently fine knowledge possessed by the police of their habits, movements, and circumstances, and the very effective uso. of this knowledge made by Inspector Mitchell. R. Whittimrham, brewer, Waikiwi,, was fined £5 for failing to fulfil the requirements of the Beer Duty Act, in that in supplying:' kegs of beer'to th" previously-mentioned defendants ho did not place th odiity stamps and the top holes in such relative positions that tho stamps must be destroyed in withdrawing tho beer.
