APPOINTMENT QV ELECTRICAL ENGINEER. Mil W. G. T. GOODMAX SELECTED. A special meeting of the City Council was held last night for the. purpose of appointing an electrical engineer: y.K-soni--The Mayor (Mr G. Lawrence), Cm (lore, Crust. Arkle, Loudon. Walker. Connor, Wilson, Rutherford,' Cole. Shaddock. Harrison, Eiddis, Kiley. Small, Whii<", 'fjeott, Burnett, and Isrinsk-y.

Tho following report oi the. combined Tramways and Eicii.rio Power and Lighting Committees was submitted:--Appoint-nient of Electrical Engineer: Tour committee recommends that one of i.h<> following applicants in; appointed to the position of electrical engineer at a salary at the rate of £700 per annum:— William H. Ashman, P. Glydo Chaffcv. William Corin, William B. Carrick. M. Cable. .W, (1. T. Goodman, Edgar E. Stark, E. Kilhuni Scott.

On the motion of ili« Mayor, seconded by CV Rrinsley, flic ropoi't was adopted.

The Ma.ynr moved—"That lire council go into commit Ice for the purpose, of making a selection by ballot."

Cr Burnett opposed the motion. Thn appointment, was an important one, and for himself he would like to record his voto openly. Tho motion was agreed to, and the council went into committee.

On resuming in public, it was agreed, on tlio motion of ihs Mayor, to confirm the business done in onmmitl.ee. On tho motion of Cr Core, seconded bv Cr Cole, it was resolved to appoint Mr W. G. T. (landman to the position of electrical engineer. ELECTRIC LIGHT AND POWER, Tlid Mayor said it was thought thai, .perhaps the council would also consider ihi; question of the charges to bo made for power and lighting, but it seemed to be the desire of tho council that the matter should bo loft over until the usual council nwnting. Cr Brinsley, chairman of tho Electric Power and Lighting Committee, ; «i!d the committee woposed to hold a special meeting to deal with the- question, anil it was .hoped that it would be able to bring ill) a report at the next meeting of Iho councd. .Ho might say that many inquiries had coine in for power and lighting, and it was •.(■ally necessary that something should bo dono immediately. They bad rceoived inquiries from people from whom they had never expected apniications. The following arc the qualifications of Mr W. G. T. Goodman, 15.11:Mcmber of (he Institute of Electrical Engineers, London; elected January. IS9'). Member of -Iho American Institute of Electrical Engineers and local lion, secretary for that institution in New Zealand; elected May, ISM!.. Member of the Electrical Association of New South Wales since 1896, and late member of the council thereof. AVas articled to the firm of Messrs Squiro and Newton (Ltd.), electrical and mechanical engineers, London,, and went through the whole of the shops, after which served with the firm of Messrs Maudsley and Field (Ltd.). London. Was in tho service of tho P. and O. Corrraany, and left to accept engagement by the Wiwd Electric. Car Company as designer. Left tho Ward Electric Car Company (Ltd.), and pined the staff of Messrs Poole and White (Ltd.), electrical and ni-sehanieal engineers, London, as assistan'- engineer, and held tlio position of head designer to Messrs Poole and White (Lid.) from August, 1833, to 111110. 1594. While with this firm designed plant for several of tho largo installations in England, among which may be mentioned St. Pandas Corpora(hn Electricity Works. Whilo with them carried out the designing and £upervising of several la;rgc lighting and power insrMlniions. among which may be mentioned electric lighting oi Mosvale, electric light and power distribution at Jlotint Lvell mines in Tasmania., etc, Also designed a scheme for generating and tra.nomilting electric power from the Xeehnn Falls to tho various .mines on tho West Coast of Tasmania. In 1897 was appointed electrical and mechanical engineer to the tramway conslructi.m branch of the Public Works Denirllncnt., New South Wales Government, which position was obtained by passing a competitive examination against over .10 competitors in civil, mechanical, and electrical eiiguiwring the examination lasting three days. Carried out •the designing and sunervising of several large works fcr the New South Wales Gr.vernm<"H. including a power station of HafKl kw. cupasiiy. Resigned from the New Sou':h Wales Government to join Messrs Noyes Bros, to tako up their electrical engineering work in Now inland. ?yS. in addition to designing ami supervising the Dimedin electric tramways and the Wainori nower transmission scheme for (he Dimedin City Corporation, lias carried out important works in various parts of New Zealand. , When in America in 1902 inspected the Bay Counties electric power transmission scheme, Pake's Pea-k .power transmission scheme, Niagara Falls, and several others; also spent sereral weeks at the Westinghousa Works, Pittsburg, exuciiraenting in the latest developments of Mgh-tensioii apparatus.
