CITY LICENSING COMMITTEE.

John Wahon applied lor the renewal ot a, publican's license lor the Commercial Hotel. The Chairman said they understood, that everything had been carried out very satisfactorily, and llic-license would be granted. GLADSTONE UOTIX. John Collins applied for a renewal of the license for the Gladstone Hotel. The Chairman asked how it was the repairs had not been carried uUt. Mr Collins said the only repairs he hod to finish were the kitchen ceihtig. Tile slating had been just finished the previous night, slid he could not do it before. Ho had given instructions to the plasterers to fix it up. Tho Chairman The case will bo adjourned for a mouth. Mr James (representing the owner) said there accrued to bo a little uncertainty as to what the cominitlce required. Some time ago certain outside* repairs had been doite on tho understanding that Mr Collins would do what was required inside. Tho Chairman said an indication had been given as to what wn.s required at last Meeting. This hotel required renovating internally, particularly the kitchen roof. The. committee was also of opinion that the outside required painting. Mr James said it was a cemented front, and the only part that would want painting was; the street basement. The front had never been painted. It had been cement washed. Ho was quite agreeable that !ht> basement should be painted, and it was.quite possible the fire escapes, put up a couple of years ago, would require painting also The Chairman said some nf the. committee would go found to tho hotci .and point but exactly what they required. Daniel White applied fm a renewal of tho' liccnso of tho Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, Mr Lang appearirg In support of the application. The Chairman said this house was to ho enlarged. The committee had seeh the place, ana tho bench proposed to adjourn the caso lor tlireo months—until, the, quarterly merliug. The license would, of course, be extended one month. THE CENTRAL WITEr,. Catherimi Josephine jlaydon applied for » renewal of a publican's license for the Central Hotel.—Mr Hay appeared for Ihe applicant. Mr Stilling for the owiih, aiid Mr James for a part owner of.the premises. Mr Stilling briefly reviewed the. circumstances connected with, the adjournment ■( the apnlication at the previous? sitting, and pnid > the parties concerned hod adopted the chairniaii's suggestion, and taking 'Mr Braithwaite as the iiibuthnieco of, the- committee in the matter. Mr Brnitliwaile, himself, snd Mr Christie (a contractor) had gone over the build--ing together. A Hole of the requirements were mado at the time, and Mr Gillies.'juii., had furnished specifications, and a tender, had lieeu accepted at the amount suggested. There was a similar, specification kept separate lit connection wilh Mr Jarhes's clients, and contracts for both had bsen let. The improvements included carpentering work, papcrhaiißing, painting lusiuV, and uaihtnig the wliolo of the outside of tho hotel. The whole of tho inferior wou'd be renovated.

The Chairman: How long will it take to finish tlio work? Mr Gillies (jtin.): About three weeks for painting. Mr Stilting • About £120 to £130 will he spent, I think. Mr James said he thought the whole work should bo very well forward within a fortnight. Mr Stilling: There is no reason why the contractor should delay.
