HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
The House met at 2.30 p.m., and procoedetl, on I lie invitation of the l Commissioncrs, to the Legislative Council to hear the commission read opening Parliament, and afler its return the members were sworn in by tho Clerk of the House, and went on to the election of the Speaker.
Mr LAWRY said he was thankful that it, had fallen to his lot. to move Ihe election of Mr Guinness, who had won golden opinions from all sides, and had distinguished himself by bis affability to all, and espeoiallv by the care and attention be invariably paid lo the youiiffer members. Mr BUDDO seconded the motion, and detailed tho many services performed by Mr Guinness. lie hoped tbilt tho House would come to a unanimous decision.
This tho House did at once. Mr GUFNNESS, in returning thanks for bis election to the high office of Speaker, declared that hia endeavour would be to be always vigilant and Just to all. ever without fear, favour, or friendship. to maintain alwavs tho traditions of the House and hold the balance even between parties. Ho reminded (he House that, without the of its inernbeis,
the Speaker was necessarily powerless, and concluded by submitting himself to the judgment of the House.
Taking the chair, the Speaker again thanked tho House for his election, and repeated I lie pledges he had given on tho floor of the House.
The Hon. W. lIALL-JONES congratulated Mr Speaker heartilv. lie sketched briefly JJr Guinness's career, and assured him of the Continued confidence of the House.
Mr MASSEY followed in the same strain, adding that. Mr Sneaker, under oil possible circumstances, could depend on Ihe support of members of both sides of the House in his endeavour to uphold the digniiy of Parliament. Mr SPEAKER briefly thanked the last speakers. The House adjourned at 3.20.
