EDUCATION STATISTICS.
The quarterly returns of attendance for the period ended March 31, 190 G. which have been compiled by the secretary of tho Otago Education Board, show that there were 12Gschools in operation in this district, employing 193 males and 312 female teachers. The number of pupils on the rolls at the beginning of the quarter was 18.031, Md a! (lie end of the quarter 1!),455. comprising 10,032 boys and 942 C girls. The average attendance was 8965 boys and 8309 girls, making a total of 17,335, being 26 more than the total for the previous quarter, and 220 less than for the March quarter, 1905. The number of pupils admitted during the quarter was 1105 boys and 1090 girls;—total, 2195. The averages oi the city and suburban schools for the quarter were:—Kaikorai. 652; Albany Street. G99; Forbury, 578; George Street, 541; O.iversham, 527; High Street, «1; Union Street, 482; Arthur Street. 477; North-East Valley. 470; Normal, 409; Macaudrew Road. 40S; Mornington. 398; Kensington, 333; Ravcnsbourne. IG2; Musselburgh. 153; St. Chir, 117; Anderson's Bay, 115; Wakari. 88, Leith Valley. «. The attendances at Oamaru wore:~Norih School, 312; South, 304; Middle, 253. At the District Hu>h Schools:-Port Chalmers. 409; Balelutha, 308; Lawrence, 257; Mosgiel, 248; Tokomairiro, 232; Palmerstou, 225; Tapanui, 108; Naseby, 154: Hampden, 124. During the quarter the Kuriwuo and. Tanas Sehools were reopened. Household schools were opened at Lee Stream, Puketai Station, and Waiiuna Estate, and a new school was opened at Lauder Railwiy Station.
