AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.

INVERCARGILL, April 14. The fifth annual Easter carnival of the. Axemen's Society, of Southland, commenced in tho Queen's Park to-dar in splendid weather. The entries received constitute a record, and all events wero keenly contested. Although to-dav is considered an "off" clay, otill Iho sports were patronised by a good number of people, although the .main events do not come off til! Monday, when it is expected to have a record attendance. ■ The management is in good hands, and everything wont off with a swing, great credit being due to Mr T. O'Byrno (president) and tho energetic secretary (Mr A. A. Paape).
MAIDEN' SAWING (ISin white pine). Eight entries.—F. Waldron and Lane 1. JI. and AV. Fordc 2, D. Burgess and R. Hassel 3. Time, 15soc.
MAIDEN CHOP (18in white pine). Twenty-six entries (in three heats).—T. Kubala, A. Cunie, R. Nelson, M. Ryan, P. Cook, J. Anderson, T, Smith, J. A. Healcy, A, Conor, and G. Garth qualified ior the final, which resulted as follows:—J. A. Healcy 1. 11. Nelson 2, J. Ambrsoii 3. Won by about" lOsec. Time, 2miu 23 2-ssec.
CARNIVAL CYCLE RACE. One mile. Fifteen entries (run in two heats).—W. Harris, A. P. Fleming, W. Blackman. J. Summers, C. F. Smith, and 11. Harvey qualified, and the final placings were:—J. Summers, GOyds, 1; W. Harris, 90yds, 2; C. F. Smith, 70yds, 3. The winner rode a good race, and won comfortably, Time, 2miu 14see.
HANDICAP DOUBLE-HANDED SAWING (22in white pine). Sixteen entries (two heats). D. and A. Chilsholm, T. Kollv am] C. O'Ronrke, F, Ford and Co., J. A. Chisholm and T. Frisky, A. Curry and A. Wells, Carson and M'lntosh, and Kilkelly Bros qualified for tho final, which resulted thus:—Kelly and O'Rourke (3scc) 1, Chisholm Bros, (scratch) 2, Carson and Jl'lntosh (scratch) 3, Time, 22 3-530e.
AXEMEN'S SHEFFIELD. 133 Yards. Seventeen entries (five heats).—P. C. Wnllburton, D. Dodds, R. Hanna, A. Bennet, T. W. Dodds, J. Curry, W. Bairtl, W M'Lennan, E. G. Sherbourne, and T, A. Henry were left in after the first round, and T. W. Dodds, R. Hanna, M'Lennan, Curry, Sherbourne, and Baircl after the second round, and Curry, Hanna, Bairtl, and Shcrhournc after the semi-final, the result being:—J. Curry (oyds) I, W. Baird (11yds) 2, R, Hanna (85yds) 3. Won bv about two yards. Time. 12 4-3 sec. Some of the starts and also the placings in this event were subjected to much criticism.
