At a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Alliance last night reforenco was made to Ulo. fact that a charter had been granted to tho Wellington Civil Service Club, making tho fourth new cIUB charter granted by tho Government m the North Island since the local option poll. The following motion was mussed:-;- That this executive strongly protests against the Action ot the Government in granting tuldi, tL.I club charters for ti» sale of honor in violation of tha spirit of the law which prohibits any increase of licenses, sue* Sn being also a breach of the piomw.. it, has r/rcviously given on tho .abject The executive rcsnectfullv urges upon aU temperance bodies tho necessity of every effort to put a stop to the wholesale increase of facilities for the sale of intoxicants with which ihe colony is threatened by this unexpected abuse of the power of government."

It believes, howmer, that tho recent advance of anti-hquor sentiment throughout, the various churches is a pledge that, the liquor traffic in this colony , doomed, and before long will be voted out of existence." (2) "This coiiventio.l recognising that the people at the recent, local option poll demonstrated by a majority of several thousands of votes their unqualified fidelity to the principles and practice of no-license, records its detornuiiation to resist any proposal whether loi compensation or State control m connec; tion with the liquor traffic in this colony. (3) "Tide convention urges upon the local leagues the great desirability of forming bands of hope iii their districts to hold meetings during tho winter months, m which meetings temperance instruction can bo given to the children and the baneuts 0 f abstinenco made clear." (4) "This con-' ventioii expresses its cordial approva ot the financial proposals of the Ncw.Zcaland Allianco in connection with the_ suggestion, that the agents working under its jurisdietion bo increased; and, further, that it re. sards illio time as opportune for the appointment of an agent to Nelson and the West Coast." (5) "This convention urges upon tho Education Department the advisability of making scientific temperance .teaching in State schools a compulsory pats subject for all standards from tho third upwards." (6) "This convention desires to record its emphatic disapproval at the grant, in" of three club charters in tho North Island, and trusts that no further grant* will bo made."
