AN ALPINE ACCIDENT.
DANGER OF SOLITARY CLIMBING,
HOKITIKA, March 2, Fears are entortained for the safety of Mr R. S. Low, a visitor from Scotland, who has made several ascents of the Southern Alps, including tho conquest of Mount Cook a year ago. On February 21 ho loft the Wcstiand side of the range to cross to the Hermitage by way of Graham's Saddle, at the head of the Franz Josef Glacier, with tho intention of meeting Dr 8011, who was crossing over from Canterbury. Nothing hti6 since been heard of Mr liow, and it is feared that he lias met with disaster. Dr Bell reached the Wcstiand side, and left to-day with the Rev. Mr Newtown and others in order to search for the missing man. It is believed that a search party is also out from the Canterbury side. The chances of rescue are not considered hopeful. WELLINGTON, March 5. Information has reached here that Mr R. S. Low, misßing for some dqys in attempting to cross the Southern Alps from the western ranges, has been found alive. His delay in reaching the Hermitage was owing to his having sprained an ankle.
