THE COMING CENSUS.

On the night of Sunday, April 29, the census of Now Zealand wilt bo taken. The last census was taken on March 31, 1901, when tho population of the colony was found to bo 772,719, exclusive of 43.143 Maoris and the population of the Cook Islands (12,292). It is estimated by tho Registrar-general (Mr E. J. von Dadelssen) that the population of Now Zealand will have increased by 116.000 during the past five years. Perhaps the most phenomenal increase has tukcii place in the North Island, where the population has increased very rapidly in recent years. . An instance of tho effect of the census in adjusting tho representation of the people for Parliament is afforded by the figures relating to I lie North and South Islands for successive census years. The electoral districts arc constituted on a population basis, and the results show:— Census. North Island. South Island. Members. Members.

Tho districts will be again defined on the basis of the coming census, and the result will probably be that the North Island for the first time will have a preponderance of representation in Parliament. When the Registrar-general has ascertained the actual population of the colony, and has finally fixed it in its various divisions, he will certify as to the correctness oi the returns, which in due course will be made known to the Representation Commissioners. Tho commissioners will first meet as a joint body to decide the quota of population for an electoral district, and will afterwards separate into tho North Island and South Island Commission for the purpose of re-adjusting the electorates.

The particulars required by the act respecting the people include—name, sex, age. married or single, birthplace, religion, occupation, education, whether British subject or alien, if suffering from sickness, accident, cr infirmity. The dwellings are also to bo described in respect of rooms and material.
