A regular visitor to the gaol submitted the case of a young man who is serving a sentence of three years for assault with intent. The newspaper report of the case indicated that the presiding judge, in passing sentence, had said that if the prisoner, after serving part of the term, realieed tho seriousness of his offence steps might be taken to obtain a remission. The petitioner advised tho Ministor that the conduet of tho prisoner during his incarceration had been good, and asked that clemency be exercised. The Minister eaid that the proper course was to petition his Excellency the Governor, and the deputation undertook to do this. The other case was that of a lad who was recently fined £5 and admitted to probation for 12 month) for assault.
