The subject, of the Rev. W. A. Sinclair's address to a. large congregation at the Garrisou Hall last evening was "The 'Worst Man in Dunedin." The speaker gave away no secrets, but drew tome pictures from which he let the audience judge for itself. He suggested that'those looking for the worst man in the direction of the most abandoned drunkard, the most confirmed gambler, tho most hardened criminal, or ibe most licentious profligate might, after all, be looking in the wrong direction, for, as opposed to the sin 6 of the flesh, there wove sins of the spirit, which, according to the leaching of Ohrist, were equally flagrant, ('hrist spoke much more harshly to tile Pharisees, the hypocrites, and the whited sepulchres than to the poor abandoned derelicts of humanity. We must learn to be charitable in our judgment* and turn the searchlight; upon our own hearts Religion wag to he tested by what it could do for the worst Jiian, and the oiily true religion was one that could take the worst man and convert him into the best. man. We understand that the general position of the mutual firo insurance branch of the Otago Farmers' Union is entirely, satisfactory. Over £80,000 worth of risks are covered, and losses up to the present havo totalled £B—an extraordinarily small loss on a year's work. All tho same, the union is not getting quite the encouragement it anticipated from the farmers generally, possibly because the union's rate is Is id per cent., alwve that charged by the companies. But it is felt that once the advantages of co-operation in this matter are appreciated there must be a large increase in the work of the branrh. Meantime,' it is noted that there has been a. steady increase from the start. Tho risks covered have increased from £20,0C0 to £60,000 in a year. The popularity of the scheme is slowly increasing as it becomes better understood by the farmors; also the farmers are daily taking a keener interest in tho work. The ravages of blackbirds on fruit crops in some parts of tho Wellington district have been serious. An effective method of dealing with the pest ha? teen discovered by the keeper of the Opawa Gardens, Christchurch, who describes in the Press how he caught 500 blackbirds and thrushes in a single season. "My plan has been to trap them by five kinds of rat-traps, baited with cherries obtained from my wire-netted cherry orchard, an additional inducement to catch the birds being the great relish lliey afford to my largo lizards and trout when the feathers of the birds arc singed off. The beneficial effect of a- blackbird diet for invalids, especially when the. birds are living on a fruit diet, has been forcibly brought to my notice. If the public generally was alive to the toothsome delicacy of blackbird pie and its health-restoring qualities we should hove fewer complaints about these, fruit-destroyers and dear fruit."
