Further particulars regarding the drown, ing of the young man Herbert Thomas at Mulutapn show that, he got into a dinghy, intending to row to a neighbouring vessel to get. bail. When some yards off he lest an oar, and plunged over to recover it. He caught it, and turned to swim liack. He was plainly visible in the moonlight, when, to Iho horror of his companion, he suddenly sank beneath the surface. As ho did not rise again those on board eet sail and cruised round in the vicinity of the spot, but no sign of the unfortunate young man could be seen, and as he. was an export swimmer they camo to the conclusion that he had been seized by a shark. Tlie missing man was employed on the mechanical staff at His Majesty's Theatre, and his father is similarly employed with the M'Mahon Dramatic Company. Young Thomas was one of the Knight-Jeffries Company's most valued assistants. NELSON, February-12. Samuel Lattimer. a miner, was killed in his claim at Rocky River. Collingwood district, on Saturday morning by a fall of stone from the roof of the funnel. His mate, Keane. narrowly escaped receiving a severe blow on the head. The two men were standing together lighting candles, preparatory to work, when the accident occurred, Lattimer beinjr crushed to death instantly. At the inquest a verdict. Was re. turned that death <vas duo to insufficient tiimVring in the drive. Deceased was 51 years of age, and well known in' tho district.
A couple of cyclists collided in of the Stock Exchange building last evening shortly before 5 o'clock-. Both riders were thrown somewhat heavily, but beyond a few bruises and some minor damage to the maohines nothing serious resulted. The- Southland Times states that, Mr C. Rask, fisherman, reported to the police on Saturday that while fishing in the estuary in the vicinity of Sandy Point on Thursday evening his not brought to the, surface the body of a man. of heavy appearance, clothed in a white shirt. Init without, a coat, i Rask, who is an old man. was unable to do more than disengage his net from tlie body. The police have been conducting a search; so far Unsuccessful!}'.
