PERSONAL NOTES FROM LONDON.

'(Frou Our Own Goebespondent.) LONDON, November 11. Mr F. W. Platts, LL.B., Port Chalmers, h at present making a briof business visit to the Mother Country. ' Ho arrived at Liverpool from New York by the s.s. Baltic on September 28, having, travelled via San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. He •visited the Niagara Falls, Salt Lake City, and other places of interest en route. Mr Platts tells mo that ho intends leaving sgain on his return to tho colon'- toward the. end of this month; ho has booked his passage to Now York by the s.s. Codric, which is to sail on the 21st inst. When I heard of him he was in Guernsey. Mr W. Brittenden (Duncdin) is in the Mother-Country chiefly on a business visit. His firm in the colony are the representatives of Messrs- Henry Terry and Sons, of Manchester, and the Duncdin business has increased so rapidly that it has teen found necessary to arrange for further development. Mr Brittenden is now in Jianohcstor, and he tells me that ho has met with great Ruceess. During his stay in England, Mr Brittenden is interesting himself in the furtherance of the coming International Exhibition to lie held at Christ-church, and lie is finding some support. At tho 'conclusion of his business in London Mr Bi-itteiidcn will spend a few weeks at Deal, his native place, looking up his relatives and the famous Deal bcatmon. Whilo there ho is going to deliver a few lectures on New Zealand—its beauties, land and labour laws, etc.—for which purpose ho lia3 made arrangements to use the slides in the possession of the New Zealand Government Office here. Writing to me, ho remarks: "Xew Zealand is in everybody's thoughts, and I do not think a finer advertisement could have l:oen given to tho colony than that given by our footballers. The colony, on their return, I am sure- will give them a right royal welcome, for they veil deserve it." jjr ,I?rittcmlcn expects to bo in Duncdin again at the end of January, after visiting the Continent. Mr J. Gruar (of the firm of Messrs JM'Dcuirall, Gruar and Co., Christehurcli) lias been in England on a visit after an absence of 16 years. For a number of years ho was connected with the well-known firm of Messrs Butterworth Bros., of Duncdin, -ml later lie was manager in Ohristcluirch for the same firm, resigning to enter into business on his own account in partnership with Mr M'Dougall. Since arriving here Mr Gruar has visited Belfast, Scotland, Lancashire, Yorkshire, and other leading centres ol industry, and has seemed various valuable agencies. Mr Omar, who was in London Ibis week, joined the P. ond 0. steamoi- Himalaya yesterday on his way back to the colony, where he expects io arrive before flic end cf the year.
