RE "BRITISH SEAMAN."
TO'the editor. Sib,—l was considerably, amused at "Britisher's".letterand the clever (?) lines quoted. In my opinion—l have just completed a long period of servioe in the Royal Navy—the men wo have at present eerving are. just as fit and able to keep tho Channel clear as ever Nelson's men were. As for those :hummus. timesilfe r,"Britisher"
know tlint. the highly-trained A.B. of- tho present day receives precisely tho same money as the A.B. of Nelson's time did— viz., Is 7d per day. and until the April of •i year the acale of rations .was tho same. The big London dailies usc<l to publish articles entitled " H.M.S. Starvation," and altogether kicked up such a row that tho Admiralty revised tho food regulations; but even now they are nono too good, tho men having to pay a considerable amount out of their pay to augment their food supply. If "Britisher".'doubts my. statements lot him ndc the firc-t man-o'-warsman he meets, and perhaps he will open his eyes a little.—l am, cte„ October 19. Will. Locurank,
