SUCCESS OF THE IIOKNINGTON BAND.
, Woutenant Herd (Wellington) was Ihe judge of the music at tho bands' contest at Jcmuka.
In the tesv selection " Santo,nella," the bands played in tho following order:—Waiinato (C. .! (ioldslone, conductor), Temuka (Ci. Croxford), Jloriiingtoii (E. Smith), Lyttelton (George Collins), Ashburlon Temperance (fi. Ilnsken), Timaru (J. II Coombs). Ashburton County (H. Humphreys) The result was: —

Lieutenant Herd said the renditions of Santanella " had pleased him very much It made here and there great demands for artistic treatment, and he had thoroughly enjoyed hearing the way the bands per'formed it. Tho bands had run one another very closeJy, but. he had no doubt as to the placing of them. The military quickstep competition resulted thus:—

Ij Flat Bass.—D. Flanagan (Morniijgton), 37 points; J:-Barrett (Temuka), 35 points. Baritone,—H, ' Grenfell (Mornington), 38 points; A. Hall (Mornington), 3G. Trombones.—J. Congalton (Mornington), 3G points; A. Moore (Timaru Marine), 34 points. B Flat Cornets.—E. Kissel (Temuka), 37 points; It. Morris (Temuka) and E. Tre'goning (Waimate), equal, 36} points. Quirtet.—Temuka 1, Mornington 2. In this event the Temuka and Mornington .bands tied, and owing to a misunderstanding tho Mornington Band were not in the hall when the Temuka Band went on to play the second time.;
_ Tenor Horn Competition.-R. Green (Mornington), 38 points, ." artisiic performance, good tone." 1; J. Grenfell (Mornington), 36 points, " very well played," 2. Euphonium.—J. .Simpson (Mornington), 38 points,- "Tiighly artistic performance," I; W. Sullivan (Lyttelton), 37 points, "splendid performance," 2.

1; J. Annand (Mornington), 38 points, "very good performance," 2. Itr E. Smith (Mornington) takes the special prize (silver-mounted baton, presented, by the Hev. Father Kerby) for most points in music in tho Quickstep. Mr C. J. Goldstone (drum major, Wnimate) takes the gold modal for moat points for drill in Uio (Quickstep.
