THE GASWORKS LOAN.
PROPOSAL PKJECTED. The poll taken on tho 12th inst to decido as to whether £50.000 should be borrowed for gasworks purposes resulted in the loan being negatived by 213 to 191 votes, there 1 icing a majority of 22 against the proposal. Tho voting in South "Ward was 11 for, 22 against; in H'igh "Ward, 42 for. 25 against; in lifll Ward, 37 for, 9 against; in Lei ill Ward, 29 for, 18 against; in Caversham Ward, 13 for, 58 against-; and in South Dunedin Ward, 59 for, and 81 against. The total informal votes numbered 12. Tho very scant interest taken in tho matter is shown by the fact tluit out of 6010 ratepayers only 404 recorded their votes. In the city tho ratepayers on the roll mimbor 4100, in Caversham 922, and in South Dunedin 988. It will be seen that, as far is tho city was concerned, the proposal was carried by 109 votes to 74, but the ratepayers in Caversham and South Dunedin Wards pronounced very strongly against it.
