PATENT SASH-RAISER AND WINDOW-FASTENER.

There is at present on exhibition at Huttoa's'Agency, Moray .place, an ingenious intention called "Hardy's Patent Sashraiser; and Lock." A large and a small ordinary ' window framo wero shown to " which yere affixed the simple contrivance which constitutes tho patent. This can [be affixed to any ordinary window which is made to slide up or down in its frame. The 'device is very simple, and consists of brass cogs, which are attached to'the window frame, and a geared ratchet screwed on to the: whole-length of each sash on one of its sides. The teeth of the cogs engage tho teeth of the ratchet, and by simply-turning a small crank a sash may 1m raised or lowered to any height desired. . By an ingenious pawl-and-clutch arrangement both upper and ■ lower sashes can be operated by the ono raiser devioe, a feature of which is a specially-designed , crank and handle,; which contains with?! itself a. spring- lever and rod, which conetitutee' one : of; the chief distinctions of'the invention.. By grasping tho crank handle tho locking device k automatically released, and either sash : may be raised or lowered : to. the position desired. Immediately this is effected tho sash beoomcs locked by 6imply 'releasing, the grasp of tho crank handle. • lie latlxsr is attachable, and when • it is removed tho jviadows cannot bo-moved

either up or down, and they aro always locked, no matter in what position they may be left. This contrivance, -which, by tho way, was patented by Mi 1 A. 11. Hardy, eldest son of tho late Mr H. ]'\ Hardy, architect, requires no sash-weights, sasliboxes, stylo pulleys, cords, catches, or lifts; consequently, there is no need for a framebox at tho sides as at present. Tho window frame may bo made of solid 6in by 2in wood, thereby effecting a great saving in cost of construction, and it is confidently expected that windows fitted with this contrivance will cost no more than windows as at present- constructed, whilst the advantages in favour of tho now invention appeal very strongly to people who desire to ventilate their rooms and at tlio same timo guard against burglarious Tntrusion during their absonce. Tho fact that windows fitted with it cannot possibly be left unfastened, either carclcssly or designedly, should ensure a largo and ready market for it. Patents havo Ijeen granted to tho patenteo in New Zealand, the United States, and tho Australian Commonwealth, and aro pending in other parts 'of the world also.
