OUR LATEST TEMPERANCE REFORMER.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l read Mr W. Thomson's reply to mine twico over this morning. I hope ho will excuse mo if I laughed a little. His "programme" is, a most tlelicious—not to say deUi'ious—day-dream. It is only halt a programme, however, for it deals with only omv side of the bar. It. is casy cnough.to arrange that the licenseo shall bo a "gentleman," But how about tho peoplo in front of tho bar? How. will Mr Thomson prevent them from " swearing" when excited with liquor? And Mr Thomson says there is to bo "no drunkenness." AVlien is a man drunk?- When is he tno drunk to have any more liquor? Ami how did lie get intoHhat condition? If Mr Thomson will bo good enough to glance again at my letter he -will obscrvo that ho overlooked, two very important points. - Allow me to repeat: (1) What will tho gentlemanly licensee do with the unmannerly crowd in front of his bar? (2) Tho mischief lies in the liquor, liowevor much a "gentleman" bo tho man who sells it. If Mr Thomson can scheme a progiammo of reform which will savo men from drinking, that would be a .>rujada worthy of his talents.—l am. etc.. August 26. J, T. Hixtox.
