CHRISTIAN BROTHERS' DEFENCE CADETS Tlio Christian Brothers' Defenco Cadets nm-tered on Thursday evening at then hall in ilalliaj street for inspection by Colonel Robin. Forty-eight members wero 011 parade, and a useful e\enmg's work Mas put in. The Colonel examined all the lads orally 011 their knowledge of musketry, paits of the carbine, and other work. The officers wcro then told off to handle their sections in the open at skirmishing and forming exercises. After some company drill nnder tlio officers, Colonel Robin complimented Captain HusFoy 011 tlio efficiency of the corps lie was pleased to noto milked progress 111 all lanks, and great willingness in the carrying out of duties, and it gavo him gieat pleisuio to inspect such a corps. The prizes for the season wero then handed out by Colonel- Robin, tho recipients being:— Champion shooting belt and trophy, Scigcant Salmon; second in belt, Colourscigeant Joyce: junior shot, Cadet G'ooncy; attendance, Sergeant W. Coughlan (who has attended every parade since tho corps started). .Rifle badges were awarded to Sergeants Salmon, Joyce, and D. Collins, Gorpoi.il Connor, Cadets Mooney, Latter, Spam, Melhck. Walsh, W. Hefferoan It was announced that waistbelts would be shortly purchased by the company, and an entcitainment would be held to elear tho co=f, of uniforms and other equipment, OTAKO DISTRICT NON-COMMIS-SIONED OFFICERS' CLUB. Tho Otago Distiict Non-commissioned OAicer-.' Club hold its -..snai weekly meeting list evening, when Battalion Sergeant-major Benfell gato an interesting and instructive Incline, the subject'being "Protection of Troops on the Jlaicb,' Sergeant-major Smith being in the chair. Tho lecturer ga\e a. lucid explanation of the l.iuous means of securing tho safety of an army by its scouts, flankers advanced guard, vanguaul, etc. The lecture was listened to v.ith great attention, and at the close a lieartv vote of thanks was moved to the lectin er. It is an excellent feature in this jear's woik that so many of tho non-com-missioned officers aio coining forward with lectin es, showing the great intel est taken 111 their work. Thero was a good attend anee, and thosn members who wore unable to be piesent missed a lecturc which would have been of great value, to them. —A church organ has recently been made in Belgium which is composed entirely of paper, the pines being lolls of cardboard. The sound is sweet and powerful.
