(Received May 19, at 9.24 p.m.) In the House of Commons Sir Keir Haidie asked if Mr Balfour was aware of the pioposedi march of the unemployed. Mr JJalfour replied that the arrangei ments of the House ought not to be modified one way or the other by any external considerations, Ho lmcl eveiy desire and expectation that the Unemployed Bill Vt on'.d pass this year. Mr Hardie said surely the Premier was aware that only force carried such a measure. Could not a. date be fixed for the second reading? Mr Balfour declared that not forje, but reasoned, cautious public opinion carried things through the House. Demonstrations of force were inimical to the prospects of legislation in that House.—(Gheere.) -lie added his earnest hope and belief that the bill would pass. Mr Hardie explained fliat he was not advocating force, only saying that the men were desperate. Seeing the indifference wheiewith the bill was treated, there was no lccourse but to foice, Unlfcss reassured. A NAVAL BASE. (Received May 19, at 9.16 p.m.) In the House of Commons Captain Pretyman announced that Bermuda iemained a naval base on a leduced scale.
