SOCIALS.

A specially agreeably social welcome was leudered on Tuesday night in the hall connected with .Trinity Wesleyan Church to Ifev. F. Rands, who has entered upon ministerial duties connected with the Xorth Diincdin Methodist. Church. He had formerly had charge of tha Woodhaugh and l\ T orth-East Valley district, where his services were liiahlv acceptable. - -The Rev. C. H. Laws presided over the gathering, and in his address voiced the high aporeciation in which Mr Rands was held in the denomination. The Rev. C. S. Phillins gave an mcresting account or tlie recent' Methodist Conference held in Wellington, and 3lr Rands also spoke. During tho evening vocal selections were given by the Mis>es Hansen and M'Farlane and Messrs Brinjsclen and M'lvenzip. A piano solo was effectively ulayed by Mr Hartley. At the close of the business and musical part of the evening's programme, the ladies of the congregation handed round refreshments. It was slated during the proceedings that the services being conducted in the Odd-fellows' Hall, Nbrth-East Valley, were attended by such encouraging numbers that an eligible sit« for a church hail been secured in Prince Edward road, and that steps would shortly be taken to cruet a place of meeting there. • The opening social of the Otago University Christian Union was held 011 Monday, 17th insl., in Stuart Hall. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by the numerous students and

friends who met to spend .the .social hour. Interesting competitions, games, songs, and recitations were the order of the evening, and one of the most noticeablc features" (though' scarcely the'mo3t regrettable) was. the eritiro absence of long and prosy speeches, Tho social ended about 10.30 p.m., and, judging from the enthusiasm displayed on all sides, the Christian Union members are going to have a very successful time this session. Tho following contributed items:—Pianoforte solo; Miss Whitson; song, Mr S. Thomson (encored); violiu solo, Miss Thompson; duet, Mi.«°s Ward; rccitation, Mr T. Haslett (encored). ■
