OTAGO EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Education Board, held yesterday, was attended by Mesrw D. P.orrie (chairman), W. Snow. W. Nicholson, .1. .Mitchell, ,1. Sim. A. Marshall, IT. Mackenzie, and the Hon. T. Fergus. ' I Claims for half cost of improvements were . granted as follow:—Miller's Flat. £5; Rae's ! Junction, £1 15s; Oulram, £0; and Oamam South, £15. In the of an application from Albany Street the request was declined, there being no funds available for the work of painting the inside of the gymnasium. Permission was granted "Mr Halliday, master at Wanaka, permission to lease llio old school site. Permission was also granted Mr Wlictler, head master at Forbury, lo lease the residence. The Macandrew Rajul Committee recommended that Mr H/jjeard. third assistant, be paid tlm salary of second assistant. Miss Faulks, who, it was mentioned, had been sccond assistant for the last 10 years, wrote, in connection with the matter that- she did not know of any reason why she should be degraded in position in order that Mr Hansard might, be enriched.—Recommendation of committee declined, the staffing of the school being in accordance with the act. An application from the teacher at Waikouaiti, asking that alterations he matte to residence, was referred lo the architect to report io next meeting. The inspector's report on a building used as a school at Pomahnka. was directed to he sent on to the School Committee. Tho inspectors reported favourably on an application for the removal of Ihe school at Wharekuri to another site.—Renort apliroved, and application t ohe made lo tho Minister for a- grant. A committee of head -teachers forwarded a request, that: a lis-f of certain appliances necessary for teaching science he sent to the _ department.—To ho forwarded to the Minister. A request from Oamaru South for improved ventilation to the school was agreed to. An application from Clark's Flat for repairs to building was also agreed to. Mr F. S. Allen was appointed captain of the North Otago Cadets in place of Mr Barber (resigned). The architect wis instructed to interview the Drainage Board in regard to the drainage of Mu-selbnrgh School. Mr D. Borrie was reappointed lo represent the board on tho Otago School Commissioners. A request from Oamaru North for repairs lo the roof of Ihe infant room was referred to Ihe acliitcet, with power to act. The Oamaru Technical School applied for tho use of the cooking room r.ud utensils and class rooms.—-The request was granted subject to the approval of lie School Committee. Oainaru North asked for extra assislance, and stated that the start' was based upon an attendance of 280, whereas the average attendance at the school was 320. mil the number of teachers was not sufficient to enable one to attend to each standard.-— The Secretary said the school was staffed according to the act, and it was decided to reply that the board regretted it had no power io d:al with the matter.—H was also decided that Ihe lot lor bo forwarded to the Minister, with a strong recommendation I hat greater elasticity should be given to the regulation in regard to new tppointlr.enL?, so as to enable the board to giant temporary a : eistance in eases where such might be necessary because of abnormal increase iii the attendance of pupils. The Secretary read the inspector's report on tliei establishment of a district high school at Cromweli. The report elated that after careful consideration the inspectors were of opinion that a district, high school could not bn maintained at Cromwell— It was decider) to forward a copy of the report lo the School Coimnitt.ee. The board then went into committee.
