THE CITY COUNCIL.
By the unopposed return of Mr Joseph Uraithwaitc to the office of Mayor of tlio city and by the re-election, equally without opposition, of three representatives of High Ward, the creation of the City Council for the ensuing term— which will practically be the first Council . for Greater Dunetlin—has already been in part effected. The fact that, at a time when a considerable amount of public feeling has been aroused against the retiring Council and when the ratepayers are manifesting some concern regarding the extent of
the commitments which that Council has made, 110 elector could be induced to olfor himself in opposition to Mr Uraithwaite's candidature for the position of chief magistrate is one that may justifiably be regarded with some pride by tlio Mayor-elect. It, Indeed, con-' stitutes a strong personal tribute to himself. Not even the fact that lie has been for many years in residence and in business in Dunedin, and that, he has served the citizens for some years upon the Council, would have petered him immunity from opposition if the electors, did not believe that personally lie was fully deserving of the high honour that has been conferred upon him. We congratulate him upon the proof his unopposed'election has afforded of the respect which is entertained for liiiii by the citizens, and we have very little doubt that he will so discharge the duties of his responsible office as. to justify the electors in their unanimous choice of him as the occupant of the mavoral chair for the ensuing term.
