The steamer Haupiri, which arrived tonight from Napier, had a. lively experience on the run down. She arrived shortly after 8 o'clock, having taken 53 hours on a passage which usually occupies only 19 hours.. Shortly after the vessel left Napier on Monday afternoon she fell in with a raging gale and mountainous sea, and at about 11 o'clock that night a hiigo sea. broke over tho ship on tho port side, bursting through tlio wall of tho purser's room, which is situated at the end of the port alleyway. The sea flooded the room and swept down the alley and into the oabin. The purser (Mr .T. Neill), who was asleep at tho time, ■was hurled out of his bunk, but managed to scramble ojit in a semi-dazed condition, Buffering from a slight bruise on the forehead. 'His writiug-desk was wrenched from the wall by tho force of the sea, and the loom was drenched. Tho engine-room.sky-lights wero shattered, and three .of the steerage ports were broken. The furious sea' caught tho ship's corned-beef cask, ami sent it bowling along the alloy, threatening

The New Zealand Shipping Company's sttanwhip Turnkisa, Captain Forbes, is expected lo arrive at Port Chalmers on Wednesday next from the Bluff. She will ship frozen mutton and general cargo here, arid leaves next day for Lyttelton arid Wellington, and is due at the latter port on the 11th May. The Turakina is at present at Timaru, and proceeds thence to the Bluff. The s.s. Navtia is due to arrive from Westport. at- 8 a.m. to-day, and will nail for Westport at 2 p.m. The s.s. Wimmera, from Sydney, via Wellington, is duo to arrive at Durtedin early on Sunday morning. She will proceed to Pert on the following morning, and sail" in the afternoon for Melbourne, via the Bluff and Hobart. on the arrival of the 2.30 p.m. train from Dunedin. 'Hie ship Oamaru. well known in Dunedin ami other New Zealand ports, was sold about the end of February by Messrs A. W. Tonee and Co., London, to Arendal owners for £3000. At the time of the c alc I lie vessel was lying at Antwerp. Tho Oamaru. which was owned, by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company, was built bv Messrs Scott- and Co., Greenock, in 1874. She was or 1306 tons gross register. ARRIVAL OF TIIF, LANGTON" GRANGE. The Grange lino steamer Langton Grange, with cargo for this port transhipped from the s.s. Buteshire at Capetown, whoso voyage was interrupted owing to fire having broken out in her hold, arrived in the lower harbour yesterday morning, and was berthed at the' George street pier to discharge cargo, of which she brings some 350 tons for this port. The Langton Grange is a fmo-look-ing steel vessel, registering 3791 tons net and 5560 tons gross, and was built at Belfast. in 1896 by Messrs Workman, Clark, and Co. She "is 120 ft long by 54 ft 2in beam and 22ft 6in depth of hold. She is fitted with triple expansion engines 0f*3250 indicated horse-power, which are capable of pronellinr her at a soeed of 12 knots per hour. Sho is fitted with refrigerating machinery, a comulete instalment of the electric light, and all the most recent labour-saving appliances. The Langton Grange has also very excellent accommodation for 24 salcon and 12 second class passengers. She is under the command of Captain C. S. HORSES FOR THE EAST. Messrs Houlder Bros, and Co. (Limited) despatched the steamer Jnsoric from Rvdney on the nib inst. with 870 horses for Hongkong. The steamer Fifeshi>'o also left Sydney 011 the samo day for Brisbane to load a number of horses for the East.
