SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
The monthly meeting ot the George Street School Committee was hold lost evening, mid ullonded by M-esars Hutchison (chairman), iJavnos, Duncan, Fnrra, Jones, Maitkiul,Mallison, and Peakc. Tho Head Master reported that tho number of pupils on tho roll wan CIO, and that tho average attendance was sfil. A circular from tho Pctono School Committee, requesting co-operation in a petition to the Government for legislation to enlarge the powers of school committees, was referred to tho incoming committee. A draft' annual report for presentation at the meeting of householders anil the statement of receipts unci expenditure for tho year were adopted. A requisition'from the bead master for additional appliances i'or instruction in subjects proscribed in the syllabus was received, and the committee decided to write the Education .Board on tho riiatter, pointing out that its funds wero not sufficient to enable it to supply theso requisites, and requesting information respecting tho source from whicli it was expected that the appliances necessary for the purposes of the syllabus should be obtained. The committee recorded its appreciation of tho services rendered to it by Mr Maitland,. who, being about to visit Great Britain, will not be a candidate for rc-electiou as one of its members. 1 ' '
The usual monthly meeting of the High Street School Committee was" held 'last evening. and was attended by Messrs W. Taylor, J. Lunn, W. Melvin, A. Taylor, jun., J. Sanders, 1). V/ishart, and IJr Church. In the absence of Mr J. H, Walker (the chairman of the committee), Mr Melvin was voted to tbc chair. The Head Master submitted a resume of the events of the year, briefly reviewing the position of the school throughout the. various standards, and, alter contrasting the present with the past year, stated that the school bad improved both in point of attendance and
efficiency. A circular letter was received from the chairman of tho Petone School Committee < with reference to that committeo's resignation ss'a'proteist against tho action'of the Wellington Education Board in appointing a teacher in tlio face of the unanimous protest; of the committee and tho community of - clone. After some discussion and deliberation; the committee decided to leave the matter over 1 for the favourable consideration of the new committee. Messrs Melvin and Lunn woro appointed , auditors. Tho treasurer _ (Mr"W. Taylor) explained that it was his intention to-*pay'a visit to tho Home Country, and that he would bo absent for about six months. Tho committeo felt that Mr Taylor was too. valuable a member to be spued,-'and iminimonaljr requested him to seek re-election,- ai«3, if successful, apply for leave of absonco ii)&9 usual way. ■
