THE FEDERAL MAILS.

THE DEADLOCK ENDED

Association—By Telegraph— Copyright. MELBOURNE. April 4.

Received April 4, nt 10 p.m.)

Tlie mail dispute has been settled, subject io approval by Parliament. The Cabinet agreed lo pay the Orient Company illiio,o3o as a subsidy for the earrings of mails.

(lieeeived April 5, at 1.17 a.m.)

"Besides the Orient Company's offer, the Cabinet discussed the offer of the Seott--I'Vll Company, which was considered unsuitable. Tt is probable a weekly service will be resumed before the end of the month, and if Parliament fails to ratify the new contract the old conditions will be reverted to. The contract is likely fo meet with considerable, opposition, on tlie ground that the amount is exa?ssive, the Labour party and a section of the general Opposition lising strongly hostile to any contract above £110,000. The Postmastergeneral declines to give details of the contract or lo slate if any new conditions are involved'.
