At a special mooting of the Tramways Committee of tlio City Council yesterday afternoon it was decided to at once start tramway construction from Maitiand street to th? Kensington Tlotel corner, and tlionco along Hillside road to Ogg's Corner. It was also decided to aceppt Mr J. J. Jones's tender (£622 Ifrs Pd) for the. widening of Porbiiry road, which will be proceeded with at once, tlio houses and fences having been shifted back. The/Land Commission will hold a meeting in Dunodin this morning to consider a number of formal matters. Last night Messrs M'Korrow (chairman), Mathcson, Awtoy, M'Lcnnan, M'Cardle, and Hall, members of the commission, arrived ia Dnnodin from the north, accompanied by Mr Loujthnan, secretary. In the course of remarking upon this subject the Mayor said thab ho considered the residents of Maori Hill were most unfairly treated. Ho could not possibly sen why the inspectors should wish to have nil the children packed together into ono school, and lie .thought, that it was nothing less than a scandalous shame that such a state of affairs should be allowed to continue. There were from 300 to 350 children of school age in the borough, and many of them were now attending the Kuikorai or the George Street School, to pro to eilhev of which necessitated a long walk for thorn. He thought that the residents of the district should make sonio move in Hie direction of holding a public meeting for tho purpose of impressing upon the board the absolute necessity of a school being established in Maori Hill.
