— The deepest mining shaft has been sunk to a little more than a milo in Cape Coiony, and the deepest bore-hole has reached about tho same depth in Silesia. The Hon. C. A. Parsons contends that there should bo no insurmountable difficulty in carrying a shaft down 12 miles. An approximate estimate has shown that, to reach a depth of two miles the oost would be £500,000. Ten years would bo required, and a rook temperature of 122deg Fahr. would bo found; while to penetrate 12 ; milcs would cost £5,000,000, and would take 85 years, tho rock temperature expected being 272deg Fair.
