MINING SUMMARY.

The dredging industry generally has been quietly but steadily pursued since tlm issue of our last three-weekly summary. Tlio majority of (he dredges—with tho exception, of course, of tfioso in tho gorges— have settled down to work again, and as most of them underwent extensive overhauls previous lo starting they should now have a. steady run for same time to come. The Waikaia dredges have sorted the year exceptionally well, and are at present, winning somo really good returns. All of the concerns in this distiict, with but one. exception, have (timed out to be splendid investments, and tliero is no doubt but, that the field will prove equally as remunerative

during -the coming year aa previous!} None of the dredges which have at varioii times put big yields to their credit, such « the Electric Nos. 1 and 2, H.irtley an , Kiley, New Fourteen-mile Beaeli. an Aianuherikia, lias yet commenced open tious: but as tin- river is at present stcadii falling am! should soon reach a fair] dredgeab!e level it wit! not be very lon before they are put into commission, one more, and thereby assist in swelling tb gold yield from the Otago dredges. I'll only reported development as far as reel ing operations are concerned is the findiu of a reef in Caledonian Gully, about half mi'.e irom the low-level tunnel of tb I'ippwary iiiino and close to thi> Glonroc mine. The reef, when prospected, w:i found to be 2ft wide, s.nd a trial crushin yielded 2cw. 2dwt to tlio ton. For month's work 520z of gold were obtaiuc from tho stone, put through the mill. Pre frction has been secured over a fivc-acr claim, and a number of other claims hav heen pegged out in tlm vicinity. All tb sluicing claims in the Lake County distric are hard at work. The Hound Hiil Miuin; Company reports the returns for tho las three months n; follows:—November, 2540z value £1004 5s 8d: December, 171oz, vnln< £677 4s 6;1: .January. 284r.7., value £112; IS?.
