CRIMINAL AND CIVIL STATISTICS.

The returns of all criminal and civil cases brought before the Police Courts and Magistrates' Courts in Dunedin-district for the year ending December 31, 1904, aro now completed, and they-show that the total number of persons taken into'custody, summoned, or apprehended was 1873 males and 244 females; 89 males aud 12 females were discharged for want- of.evidence; cases against 183 males and 21 females were dismissed; 46 males were committed for trial; 1187 males and 127 females were summarily convicted; 599 males and 69 females were fined; 206 males and 29 : females were imprisoned in lieu of fine, or'surety; 30 males and 28 females received: peremptory imprisonment; 1 male was released under , the First Offeuders'xProbation Act; orders were made against 219 males and 53. females; and 149 males and 31 females were con-' victed and discharged with a caution. Last year 2121 males'.and" 342'.females were taken into custody, summoned, or apprehended. ; The figures' for 1904 ehow that' 514 males and 105 females were npprehened for drunkenness, 479 males: and 78: females were convicted, and 95 males and 26. females discharged; 60 males and 1 female were arrested for common assault,- and 10 males for assault and robbery ; 104 males and 13 females .were apprehended for theft, 5?-

males and 6 females for indecent language (of which §0 males and 3 females were eouvicted), 22 males for indecent acts, and 33 males and 18 females for vagrancy. Prohibition ordere were granted against 118 males and 5 females; 112 males and 21 females were brought up under tho Truancy Act; 120 males were summoned under the Destitute Persons Act; 217 males and 6 female*, t-ere charged with breaches of b)'-laws; 31 iialos and 24 females were apprehended mder the Lunatics Act, of which 26 males md 24 females were committed to the >-yhun. Forty-three persons were proceeded against for entering licensed presses during tho currency of prohibition irders against them, and of these 41 were onvicted.

The civil cases for the year were:— 'laints entered, 2315; cases tried, 1376; iggrcgate amount sued for, £30,503 9s 8(1; iggregate amount recovered, £14,056 13s Bd. The figures for the civil business last year wore:—Plainta entered, 2693; cases tried, 1251; aggregate amount sued for. £357600 7s 4tl; aggregate amount recovered, £16,978 6s 4d. For the City of Dunedin the total numbers of offences we're:—l9o3,llo2; 1901, 1031. Drunkenness: 1993,531; 1904, 543. For Port Chalmers the total offences were: — l!l()3, ill; 3904, 114.
