THE GREATER DUNEDIN SCHEME.
Considerable interest was taken in South Dunedin Borough on January 31 in regard to the polling on the question that tho borough and tho City of Dunccliu should lje constituted one united borough. The oppo nents of amalgamation worked strenuously all day to defeat the proposal, and employed traps and vehicles to convey as many voters as possible to the polling booths, and not a few were of opinion that the efforts in this direction would bo successful. However, a total of 584.votes was recorded in favour of amalgamation and 430 against, leaving a majority of 154 in favour of the proposal. Only 11 informal .votes were recorded, 10 of which were at the main booth and one at the Salvation Army L'stracke. As indicating the interest taken in the poll it may he mentioned that of 2237 persons on the roll, 1024 recorded their votes. ' The polling hours were from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and at 7 p.m. tho Returning Officer (Mr D. M'Kenzie) announced the result as follows:—
