THE KNIGHT-JEFFRIES COMPANY.

Lytton's well-known play "The lady of Lyons' was staged by the Knight-JefFries Com. pany to closc their Dunedin season in His Majesty-Theatre on Saturday night. A splendid, house greeted the company, N which haa easily eclipsed all previous records on the financial results of a dramatic season at His Majesty's, The piccc was well produced, and the leadmg roles excellently sustained by Mr as Claude Afelnotte and Miaa Maud Jeffrie's as Paulino. Mr Knight's Claude Melnotte was slightly reminiscent of hia Mon6iour Beaucaire, particularly up to the point, where. Claude Melnotte marries Pauline. Mr Ivnight made the most of the tedious grandiloquence which is required of tho part, and in the lines where Claude explaiushia to his wife the elocutional effort itself was a Miss Jcffries's Pauline was a tearful heroine, who impelled sympathy quite as much by her charming appearance as by the depth of her woes, but her acting wfts convincing and natural, and gained hearty appreciation from the house. Mention might, also be made of Mr A. "Wontner as Monsieur Beau- • scant, and Mr a. P. Carey Colonel Damaa. At the close of the play Miss Jeffries and Mr Knight received quite an ovation from the nouse, tho applause and cheering lasting for some minutes, while the curtain had to be raised again and again to enable the recipients to bow their acknowledgments. The company sailed yesterday by the Wim* mora for Melbourne.
