HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE.
<3> FAREWELL APPEARANCE TO-NIGHT. " The Sign of the Cross" has proved to be the piece amongst those announced by Mr J. C. Williamson's present company which lias been most eagerly looked forward to. As early as 5 o'clock last evening people commenced to surround jjtho doors of His Majesty's Theatre, and by the time the opening orchestral number was played the holding capacity of the building was taxed to its utmost, many having to be content to pay for standing accommodation in the dross circle. The play was 'produced with the.completeness and faithfulness, which characterised the previous night's performance, and the curtain had to bo raised again lat the concluding tableau ere the large audinece was content to retire. The company will present Buhver Lytton's delightful romance this evening, and this will be the farewell appearance of Miss Maud Jeffries and Mr "Julius Knight in New Zealand, as they return to England at the termination of the Melbourne and Sydney return seasons. In to-night's performance Miss Maud Jeffries will essay lli£ difficult role of Pauline, and local theatrical history should bo enhanced by another fine performance by this talented actress. Mr' Julius Knight has already met with a roost flattering recption as Claude Molnotto, and this will doubtless prove a fitting termination to a most brilliant season of artistic and financial triumphs. Magnificent costumes and uniforms will bo seen j>i connection with this evening's production, which will be sure to attract a crowded attendanco to bid farewell to such popular artists. '
