On tho other side of the (Jlenomaru tunnel the spceial going to Owaka in copncction with the Balclutha races was met, and the men, who were in two trolleys—four in ono and two in the oth&r,—had just time to jump off wlien the engine crashed into the foremost trolley. A few seconds earlier and the train would have been met in the tunnel, when a fatal accident must inevitablv have occurred. The Tort Chalmers District High School reopens on Monday. It is very satisfactory to loam from the rc-ctor's report that five candidates (girls) successfully passod tho matriculation examination. The annual picnic of tho school takes placo at Waikouaiti on the 15th inst.
