(Pbu United Pbks Association.) AUCKLAND, February i. The New Zealand Senate passed a commercial course this morning. It provides three years' study, the first examination to tako place in two years after entrance. Tho curriculum covers French or German, history, geography, economics, mathmatics, or one of the following sciences:—Physics, chcmistry, and geology—and accountancy. Tho second examination, which will be held a year later, takes in commercial law, statistics, commercial methods, French or German, accountancy, or one of tho three scionccs above not previously taken,' and two of the following,:—Actuarial inatheinatios, industrial law, economics, history, :uid currency and banking; language and economics to be tho same as for 8.A.; general history, 1760 to 1890; B.A. aigebra, intermediate mcdical physics, chemistry, geology, B.A. physical paper second examination. Tile Senate will rise to-morrow. The Mac.Millan Brown prize in tin? University of New Zealand lias been awarded to Guy H. Schcfield, of Victoria College, Wellington. Schoficld is a member, of t-lKs literary staff of tho New Zealand times. The English Examiners Committee recommended tho following lists of names of examiners to lw invited by tbe agent in tho order in which they arc placed:—Mathematics, H. F. Baker, Sc.D., F.R.S., St, John's Collegw, Cambridge; C. Smith, M.A., master ot Sidney Sussex Collego, Cambridge; W. M. I licks, Sc.D., F.R.S., prin : cipa'l of University College, Sheffield; S. L. Xoney, M.A„-Royal Hollo way College for Women, Egham; W. H. H. Hudson, late professor King's College, London. History; Professor Tout, Manohcstor; Professor Lodge, Edinburgh; Professor Maclay, Liverpool. Milsie: Sir J. F. Bridge, Mus. D., Sir A. C. Mackenzie. Education: J. Adams, principal of the London Day Training College; Professor M. 13. Sadler, • jManchcster; Professor J. J. Findlay, Manchester. The report was adopted. The report of the Economics Committee was brought up as follows:—The committee recommends (1) that tho definition of economics in tho Bachelor of Arts degree be as follows:—Economics (two papers)—(a) general economics of production, consumption, distribution, and exchange of wealth, ■law of population, emigration and immigration, problems of industrial organisation, strikes, trades unions, monopolies and combinations, proposed remedies for low wages, over-production, land tenures, Socialist theories, State and municipal Socialism, land nationalisation, land rating and taxation; (b) the more fundamental treatment of money, credit, interest, banking functions, international trade, foreign exohange, lialanee of trade, economic functions of government, Froetrade and Protection, State regulation of labour arid la'bour disputes, and public finance. (2)Tbat the definition of econoiuios for honours in Arts be as follows:—Economics (threo papers). The subjects of economics treated more t n!ly than fur degrco of Bachelor of Art 6, with special reference to tie following methods: Of the economioal investigation and use of statistics, history of economics, theories of social progress, history of economies, changes in relation to their causes. The words "preferential trade" were inserted after the words " Freefcrade and Protection " in clauso (b) of section 1, and Hie words " including the principles of taxation" were added.to the same clause. Section 2, relating to definition of economics for honours in Arte was postponed till next session. The report as amended' was edcptcd. The Economics Committee ako recommended—'" That application be mado to the Parliament of Now Zealand for power to confer tho degrco of Doctor of Philosophy and that an extension of the charter in this direction l>o applied far at tho same time cis application is made for its extension to confer degrees, power to confer which has recently teen granted, and that when this power has been, obtained- economics shouid be one of the subjects for this degree." After a short discussion, in tho course of which comment was made on tho fact tliat tho degree in question had lately been recovering its former place in public esteem, the recommendation was adopted.
